Bookfest: Brits In Brooklyn

This afternoon I got to meet British publisher Nii Ayikwei Parkes (left) from Flipped Eye at the Brooklyn Book Festival. Nii told me that, until the arrival of Granta this year, Flipped Eye was the only British publisher that attended the festival. Today also saw NYC celebrating the 400th anniversary of another British arrival.

Save Coney Island!

The rally marking the last chance to save Coney Island took place on the steps of
Brooklyn's Borough Hall today. Participants called on Mayor Bloomberg and the
New York City Council to rethink the rezoning plans for the amusement district
in Coney Island. Under the proposed plan, high-rise hotels will built on the south
(sea) side of Surf Avenue, throwing what's left of the amusement area and part
of the boardwalk into shadow.

For an outline of the plans, watch the Mayor of Coney Island, Dick Zigun, below.
