Those darker curtain-like structures, as you called them, between the cloud and the ground, are the actual rain coming down.
Nice work on the contrasts.

thanks Jean! I was wondering more about what was causing those bands of light and dark. to get this detail I underexposed a couple of stops and pushed the contrast.
